Shopping for new Hosting

During the past two months, traffic to my Anime Blog grew substantially (Last month 7300 visitors. Currently at 6300+ visitors and raising). Sadly, pages seemed to load a bit slower (12+ seconds). If this keeps up into 2011 when I start the Winter 2011 season and finish my backlog, things can get a bit worse.

This is why I am planning to start paying for my hosting since I have some money. Since I will be watching Anime for indefinitely, I will continue to blog. I would rather pay for 2 years as a lump sum so I don’t have to worry about having monthly charges. I am thinking about WPWebHost Freedom Plan since there servers are optimized for Wordpress and their prices seemed reasonable. I don’t really need unlimited disk space and bandwidth since I am only using about 2GB of space currently and all pages are cached on Wordpress. After the coupon I found (35%), it comes out to be 78 dollars.

When I move to paid hosting, I would need to put ads up to sustain myself since I don’t have a job. I might try to get a summer job to help with the hosting of the blog, but yeah… Good hosting is not cheap and I refuse to use Wordpress.com since it’s too limited since I can’t use my WPTouch Pro plugin and custom themes.

Kokidokom is down… again!

The last time I saw Kokidokom going down was like a whole month and a week ago as told by Author of Ani-Nouto. Unfortunately, the site went down again today as a result of BlueHost suspension. The suspension of Kokidokom’s host brought down anime blogs like Simplicity, Anime Princess, Hey Say Anime, Anime^2, and Metanorn.

When the sites grow bigger, shared hosting may not be feasible anymore. In some cases, site suspension can be the shared host’s fault depending on their strict policy on resource usage even if they provide “Unlimited” bandwidth and storage. Zzeroparticle of Anime Instrumentality Blog experienced this for several months when his host complained about the excessive RAM usage. The strange thing is that his site was only generating 400 visitors per day. The number of visitors that size can’t possibly generate a very high CPU and RAM usage even with a caching plugin enabled. Eventually, he moved the site to WPWebHost and haven’t had any problems ever since.

Perhaps Kokidokom needs to switch to a more reliable host to get rid of this suspension problem once and for all. After all, BlueHost were the ones caused havoc to anime blogs when they took down Hinano’s blog for instance.

Update: Kokidokom is now back up.
